While many fans and loved ones have been sharing tributes to Van Der Beek, one in particular has us rather emotional.
Alfonso Ribeiro Said His "Last Goodbye"
Alfonso Ribeiro went on Instagram to share a personal photo of himself embracing the Varsity Blues star. He wrote in the caption that the picture, taken by Van Der Beek's wife, Kimberly, took place right before he said his "last goodbye."
The co-host of Dancing With the Stars added, "My last moment was making him laugh one last time. I really miss him already."
He also shared a picture of himself and Van Der Beek on his Instagram Stories, showing them during better times. "So much love lived in this friendship," he wrote.
Ribeiro and James Van Der Beek Were Very Close
Ribeiro was not the host of DWTS when Van Der Beek was on in 2019. However, the two had been close. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor shared that he was "broken" by the death of the Varsity Blues star. He is also the godfather of Van Der Beek's 7-year-old daughter.
"He was my true friend brother and life guide. I was with him through this horrible journey to beat cancer," Ribeiro shared in another post.
"I will forever be in debt for all they've given me and my family," he added. "He will live forever in my heart. I will always be there for their children. I will always hold my role as Gwen's Goddie daddy as one of the most important roles of my life.
"I love you James and know I have a guardian angel watching over me. Being able to say goodbye this weekend will always live with me. RIP my brother. RIP."
A GoFundMe was created by friends of Van Der Beek to help support his family. It has raised over $2 million so far.
