Speaking with CBS affiliate WRGB-TV, Crystal Pratt claims Walmart workers yelled at her about the animal. According to Pratty, the workers at the Albany location weren't happy about the animal not being on a leash. Pratt says that her golden retriever is a service dog. The Walmart shopper also uses a mobility scooter and has trouble getting around.
She said her service animal helps her reach items she cannot get to. But according to Pratt, five Walmart workers approached her about the animal. Ultimately, the staff called the cops on Pratt. "They just kept yelling from across the aisles that she needed to be on a leash," Pratt said. "I must have told them a dozen times to look up ADA FAQ 27. They refused."
Walmart Shopper Escorted Out
Ultimately, Pratt says police escorted her from the Walmart premises for trespassing.
"I wasn't even able to finish shopping," she said. "Their lotion is locked up behind cabinets, and I knew no one was going to help me. I just wanted to get something to cheer my sister up."
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, service dogs should be harness or leashed. However, there is an exemption. Those who are unable to harness their animals aren't required to do so but must control their animals.
Ultimately, Pratt says the incident upset her.
"People bring emotional?'support animals into Walmart all the time, and I understand why employees get suspicious," Pratt said. "But there's a huge difference. Once a customer says it's a service dog and explains the task, they need to back off unless the dog is out of control. Bella wasn't."
Meanwhile, Walmart released a statement following the incident.
"Walmart values every customer interaction and is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive and respectful shopping experience for all," a spokesperson told WRGB. "Service animals are welcome in our stores, and we are committed to following ADA guidelines and applicable state laws."
