When it was announced that the "All Summer Long" singer would be headlining Turning Point USA's All-American Halftime Show, there was some considerable backlash.
But instead of screaming back at his critics, Kid Rock is trying a new approach. We have the details below.
What Is the "All-American Halftime Show"?
Announced in October, The All-American Halftime Show has been billed as a family-friendly alternative to the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, California. In addition to Kid Rock, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, and Gabby Barrett will perform.
"We're approaching this show like David and Goliath," said Kid Rock. "Competing with the pro football machine and a global pop superstar is almost impossible ... or is it?"
He then added, "He's said he's having a dance party, wearing a dress, and singing in Spanish? Cool. We plan to play great songs for folks who love America."
Why All the Controversy Over Kid Rock?
Kid Rock has long been an ally of President Donald Trump, making several appearances at the White House and performing at the Republican National Convention two years ago. This may have been a reason why he was chosen to headline the All-American Halftime Show.
However, many are taking issue with how some of the 55-year-old's lyrics contradict the wholesome values that the event is meant to highlight.
For example, in the 2001 song "Cool, Daddy, Cool," the Michigan singer talks about how he prefers underage girls. He sings, "See some say that's statutory (But I say it's mandatory)."
But judging from a recent social media post, it seems like Kid Rock is taking all the criticism in stride. He posted a quote from Bryant that encapsulates his Mamba Mentality.
