According to NBC San Diego, the incident happened on Thursday in Oceanside, California. The fire department responded to an incident at a home on North Horne Street. Upon arriving at the home, they discovered the teen. He had acute burns to his body, including critical injuries to his chest and face. The unidentified teen had also experienced a "traumatic amputation" of his right hand as well.

Paramedics assisted the teen at the scene. They then airlifted him to the UC San Diego Burn Center for treatment of his injuries. According to authorities, recreational incendiary devices are illegal in the California county. Following the incident, officials reminded others of the dangers of fireworks. They're beautiful, but they can also be deadly under the right circumstances.

"The Oceanside Fire Department reminds the community that fireworks pose serious risks, especially to minors, and urges residents to follow all safety guidelines and local regulations regarding the use of fireworks," OFD officials said in a statement to the outlet.

Boy Injured After Firework Explodes in His Hand

It's not the first time a firework led to bodily harm, even in California no less. Sadly, we only have to rewind to last year to find similar results. In 2025, an 8-year-old girl died in the state after being injured by illegal fireworks.

At the time, the Buena Park Police Department reported, "Officers observed family members frantically carrying a child into a residence. Officers immediately stopped to assist. And discovered a young girl suffered critical injuries, consistent with a fireworks-related explosion. Officers quickly began life-saving efforts for an 8-year-old female child. The child was transported to the University of California, Irvine (UCI) hospital, where she was pronounced deceased."

Stories like this are a reminder of the dangers that a firework can pose. Always practice safety and proper precautions.
