Last year, Brett Young released "Drink With You," a song about how alcohol can cause people make bad decisions.

"It's a story as old as time about how it's sometimes easy to fall back into old habits rather than move on," the singer said in a press release

In hindsight, that song may have come from a very personal place. Young recently talked about his relationship with alcohol and how one pop artist inspired him to make a change.

Brett Young Called Alcohol "A Crutch"

In a recent interview on the SiriusXM station The Highway, he began to realize that alcohol wasn't serving much of a purpose in his life.

"I think it was a crutch that I didn't need," he said. "It didn't need to be replaced."

The singer added, "It was just something that had become so baked into the culture that it was commonplace. It was every day when it didn't need to be. So there hasn't been a replacement. It's just been nice to live and thrive without it."

Young Credits This Singer With Helping Him Get Sober

It was a television interview Young saw with pop star John Mayer talking about being at Drake's birthday party that got him thinking about his relationship with alcohol.

"He said he was in, like, the fourth or fifth day of a hangover — which is pretty insane," said Young.

"He said he just heard his own voice talking to him, saying, 'How much of your potential do you want to have? Because if it's 50 percent, then fine — keep having fun.'"

It was then that Young took a good, hard look at himself.

"I was showing up for my family. I was doing all the things. We were good," he said. "But was I really waking up at 6:00 in the morning with my kiddos at 100 percent of myself? The answer was absolutely not."

Young, who has two children with his wife, Taylor, decided to make a change.

"I wanted to take that kind of fog out of it and be more present for everybody," he said. "And with that, get healthier and start thinking about how long I can hang around as the best version of myself for this family."
