Shelly Sepulveda loved football and the Patriots, almost as much as she loved taking care of people. Sepulveda worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse. But for the past two years, she had been battling ovarian cancer.
Weeks ago, Patriots owner Robert Kraft surprised her with Super Bowl LX tickets. The team brought her out on the field before their Wild Card game against the Chargers. That's when Kraft presented her with tickets to the Super Bowl.
Patriots Superfan Dies From Cancer
At the time, the superfan was overjoyed. "When I'm here, I don't think about cancer, I watch the Patriots," Sepulveda told Kraft, according to Boston 25 News.
Just days after the surprise gift, the nurse learned that the cancer was no longer responding to chemotherapy. As she sought clinical trials, she held onto hope that thse would get to see the Super Bowl. "I want them to know how much this is keeping me going," she said.
Sadly, Sepulveda passed away just hours after the Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos and secured a spot in the Super Bowl.
Taking to her GoFundMe, her family confirmed her passing, "We are heartbroken to share that Shelly has passed away last night at 1:51 am. She was a devoted wife to her wife, Tami, and an incredible mom to six wonderful kids who were the center of her world. Shelly was deeply loved, and her loss has left an unimaginable hole in her family and in everyone who knew her."
The post continued, "We are asking for help during this incredibly difficult time to cover the costs of Shelly's funeral and memorial services. Her passing was unexpected, and the financial burden has added so much stress to an already devastating loss."
Tami Sepulveda wrote Monday that Sepulveda "tried as hard as she could to stay here. She is a fighter and now our angel watching down on us."
"I'm just numb from pain it's so hard, but I know how much she was loved! She was truly the best wife and mother and friend we will miss her so so very much," Tami Sepulveda wrote. "Rest in peace now Shelly, I Love you."
