Muriel Connick worked at a Burlington in Pompano Beach, Florida. It's a gig that she had been working for a long time because, despite being 92 years old, she still had bills to pay. But a chance encounter with a shopper, April Steele, changed her life.
Connick had been working in the dressing room at the department store. That's when Steele noticed her working on her feet. She tried to pay Connick a compliment. But Connick's response hit her with a slap of reality.
92-Year-Old Has To Work
"There was no smile on her face. In fact she looked angry, I thought I would compliment her to try to make her smile, I said good for you to still be working, she looked at me angrily and said would you want to work at 92," Steele wrote in a GoFundMe.
Honestly, the answer to that question is no. I don't even want to work at 31, much less 92. The response made Steele's stomach drop. "My heart sank. I thought, 'Why is a 92-year-old woman working?' It just seemed unbelievable to me," Steele said.
So why didn't the 92-year-old retire? Well it's all due to all of her bills. She explained, ""It's the rent and it's the car payment and the car insurance and the telephone, electricity and cable."
Wanting to do something to help her, Steele launched a fundraiser for the woman. And the internet answered. The fundraiser asked, "Should a 92 year old woman have to work because she cannot survive otherwise?"
In response, GoFundMe has raised more than $65,000 for the 92-year-old. Steele told CBS12: "People have been so generous."
Meanwhile, Connick was thankful. "I was really surprised, and I didn't know she was going to do all this," Connick said. "I thought she was just going to give me a card and say, 'This is to help you.' I really thank them very much."
