Kelly Reilly Says the Drama on ‘Yellowstone’ Set Ruined Its Ending

The actress, who played Beth Dutton on the hit drama, said that it was a "shame" that the show ended the way it did.

Depending on who you talk to, the finale of Yellowstone was either a satisfying send-off, seemed rushed, or was disappointing.

Kelly Reilly, who played Beth Dutton on the Taylor Sheridan drama, says fans were robbed of the ending it truly deserved.

"It's a shame it ended that way, but it did," she recently told The Sunday Times.

What did the 48-year-old actress mean by that statement? We have the details below.

Reilly Said "A Lot Went on Behind the Scenes" of "Yellowstone"

As we reported back in October, there was some tension on the set of Yellowstone. Kevin Costner wanted less time on set so he could work on his Horizon film franchise, sparking a feud between the actor and show creator Sheridan.

However, one incident left Reilly in tears and shut down production.

Costner was filming a scene with Reilly and Wes Bentley. Costner was allegedly leaning on Bentley to use Costner's approach for the scene rather than Sheridan's. When Bentley stood his ground, witnesses say Costner lunged at the actor.

A witness said, "No fists were thrown, but they were in each other's faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated."

Reilly hinted that some of the on-set drama led the show to end the way it did.

"(If) we were just having a beer, I could share more," she said. "But yes, it was only supposed to go on for five years. It was successful... a life of its own. I'm just picking my words because I've never really talked about it. A lot went on behind the scenes that had nothing to do with me; I was just waiting. 'When are we going back to work?'"

Reilly Is Excited To Revisit Beth Dutton in a New Spinoff

Reilly and Cole Hauser will return to their characters in Dutton Ranch, one of Yellowstone's many spinoffs Sheridan has planned since the show ended in 2024. She shared that she can't wait to play a different version of the beloved character.

"This is a different era - I had hit my quota of the younger Beth," says Reilly. "Because she is unapologetic, out there, flawed, damaged and brave. Women are always asked to play strong role model types, while men can play the gnarliest characters and get away with it."
