Per the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), ketamine is an anesthetic used on animals and people that can cause hallucinations.

According to the outlet, authorities probing Irsay's death have been in Indianapolis. The FBI also issued subpoenas for documents related to his connection to Haroutunian, "his alleged substance use," and death on May 21, 2025, in Beverly Hills, California. The FBI reportedly did not comment on their investigation.

Haroutunian Signed Irsay's Death Certificate

It was Haroutunian who allegedly signed Irsay's death certificate. He attributed the NFL team owner's death to "cardiac arrest caused by acute pneumonia," per the outlet, plus a pair of heart conditions. However, there was no autopsy done on Irsay. He had known health problems, including difficulties with substance abuse. Irsay reportedly had "at least 15" stays in rehab.

Irsay Allegedly Overdosed Twice in Late 2023

Per the outlet, Haroutunian was treating Irsay. He "allegedly prescribed him ketamine injections and a stockpile of opioid pills in the years leading up to his death." Irsay reportedly overdosed two separate times in two different locations at the end of 2023.

He Led a Truly Remarkable Life

According to his obituary, Jim Irsay genuinely loved the Indianapolis Colts and ushered them into a period marked by many stellar victories. That included "10 division titles, two AFC Championships," and a world championship, the Colts' fourth.

He was also a dedicated connoisseur of music. Irsay owned a vast collection of items that any music buff would envy. Many of them were connected with some of the most important figures of the modern era, such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Prince, Jerry Garcia, and numerous others.

Irsay also formed a band and performed with greats like Vince Gill, Ann Wilson, Stephen Stills, John Hiatt, and Peter Wolf.

In addition to football and music, Irsay was a major philanthropist and a devoted family man.
