Fernando Mendoza's Parents Have Ties to Miami

The Mendozas were raised in sun-drenched Miami before they relocated to Boston. The married couple was in their 20s at the time. Their son Fernando was born first, then Alberto, and finally Max.

Fernando Sr. and Elsa Mendoza Were Both Involved in College Sports

Per Athlon Sports, "Mendoza was raised in an environment that pushed him to compete and improve." The elder Mendozas, who are of Cuban heritage, were each involved in sports in their younger years. Both have been high achievers in their professional lives as well.

Dad Fernando Mendoza Sr. rowed at Ivy League Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The family patriarch is now a Miami-based pediatric emergency director. According to People, he landed a gold medal in rowing at the Junior World Championships in 1987 before continuing his rowing career at Brown.

Mom Elsa was a tennis player at the University of Miami. She has an MBA to her credit.

Elsa Mendoza Is Dealing With Multiple Sclerosis

Their mom did not want to alarm or burden her boys with news of her medical condition. As Elsa Mendoza wrote in a heartfelt letter to "my dearest, darling" Fernando, dated December 11, 2025, that was published in The Players' Tribune: "I was diagnosed about 18 years ago, but of course you never knew that. You and Alberto were so young, and I was doing fine... and mostly I didn't want you to worry. It just felt like this impossible thing to place on you guys. On my sweet boys."

She added to Fernando, "You manage to make me feel like I'm still every part of myself. Like I'm still that same person you've been teammates with since we got through our first Boston winter together. Like I'm still that same mom."

Fernando Made His Feelings for His Mother Clear in His Heisman Trophy Speech

When Fernando accepted the coveted award on December 13, 2025, he made an emotional speech and said the following about his mom in part. No more devoted words could be spoken by a child about their parent. He said, "Mami, this is your trophy as much as it is mine. You've always been my biggest fan. You're my light, you're my why, you're my biggest supporter...."
