Proposed Bill Would Rename a Street and Two Bridges in Oklahoma City After This Country Music Icon Who Died in 2024

The country singer in question was born two hours away from the location of the bridge that could be renamed in his honor.

It's been almost two years since the world lost Toby Keith. The country music icon died in February 2024 after a battle with stomach cancer. Even now, musicians and fans talk about the impact the artist had on their lives and careers.

The "Beer For My Horses" singer may be gone, but a bill has been introduced in Oklahoma to ensure that he is never forgotten. We have the details below.

Oklahoma Wants to Memorialize Toby Keith

TV station KSWO in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, reports that State Senator Lisa Standridge introduced a bill that honors Keith. As many fans know, the singer was born and raised in the Sooner State. He often talked about how it influenced his music and values.

In the proposed legislation, the bridge over I-35 and Indian Hills Road in Norman, Oklahoma, would be named the "Toby Keith Memorial Bridge." It would be named the "Toby Keith Memorial Interchange" if a new interchange were built at the same location.

Additionally, a possible spur from Indian Hills Road to I-35 to connect to I-44 would be named "Toby Keith Parkway" if the bill passes. Also, a bridge built over the Canadian River from the potential spur would be named "Should've Been a Cowboy Bridge." This name is a nod to Keith's first hit.

That's Not All

Should the bill pass, a method for citizens to add artwork on the potential "Toby Keith Parkway" would be created. The singer's family could also commission art to honor him.

"I would defer completely to the family that has lived in my district for many years," Standridge said. "Personally, I can picture a profile rendering of Toby in his hat, with a guitar in his hands, framed by an American flag,"

The bill is expected to be considered by the Oklahoma Legislature after it reconvenes in February.

Keith has received 14 ACM Awards, among other honors. He has also been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

"This award tonight is the only thing I ever wanted, and thank you for making this possible for me," he said when he accepted the latter honor in 2015.
