80s Rocker Just Canceled His First Show of the Year—His 49th Canceled Show of His Last 100 Scheduled Concerts

Why is Morrissey cancelling so many shows? The indie singer gives an explanation in a recent statement below.

Morrissey, who's well known for his work as frontman of The Smiths, recently announced that he's cancelling more shows in 2026. The popular singer has gone from indie stardom to chosen obscurity, and everyone's confused as to why.

In November of 2025, the singer cancelled the entirety of his South American tour due to "extreme exhaustion". This followed the cancellation of dates in Boston and Connecticut.

This week, Morrissey's team issued a statement that was shared via Morrissey-Solo, saying he was cancelling two shows in California. One at Rancho Mirage on Saturday, January 3, and one in San Diego on Tuesday, January 6. The explanation for the cancellation of the shows was his having "an adverse reaction" to his medication.

"Due to an adverse reaction to a prescription medication, the Morrissey concert originally scheduled on Saturday, January 3, 2026, has been postponed," the statement read. "Please hold onto your tickets as they will be honored for a rescheduled date. Should you wish to request a refund, please contact your original point of purchase."

No further explanation or announcement of a rescheduled show was provided for the San Diego show on January 6.

Currently, Morrissey is scheduled to return to the stage for a performance in San Antonio on January 10. However, fans are skeptical that he will follow through. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Morissey has cancelled 49 of his last 100 shows.

What Morissey's Been up to Since Going Solo

Since breaking off from the Smiths in 1987, Morrissey has embarked on what started as a successful solo career. However, this transition hasn't been without struggles, as the singer has had to navigate sticky relationships with various record labels.

In 2020, Morrissey signed with Capitol Records after being dropped from BMG, and was ready to release his album, Bonfire of Teenagers. However, in 2022, Capitol shelved the album, and Morrissey expressed that he believed "sabotage" was the label's plan for his album all along, according to iHeart.

In December of 2025, the former frontman of The Smiths shared on Instagram that he had signed to Sire Records. This move is actually rather full circle, especially since this label was responsible for much of The Smiths' music in the US in the 80s.

Currently, Morrissey is supposed to be on his Nude tour, which promotes his upcoming album You're Right, It's Time. This album is slated for release later in the year.
