Trisha Yearwood Is Enjoying A Career First With Her New Album, Out Now

Trisha Yearwood is enjoying a career first with her new album, The Mirror. The record, out now, marks the first time Yearwood has written songs for a project. Yearwood is a co-writer on all 15 songs.

"When I was 19 years old someone told me I wasn't a songwriter, and I let that be the truth for a very long time," Yearwood says. "But at some point in the past few years, something shifted, and I started writing and then just never stopped. You'd think that after all this time, I'd have nothing new to share, but now I feel like I'm on a whole new adventure."

Yearwood is joined by Lady A's Charles Kelley on a song called "The Record Plays On." Hailey Whitters joins her on "Drunk Works," while Jim Lauderdale sings with Yearwood on "The Shovel."

Why Trisha Yearwood Never Wrote Songs Until "The Mirror"

Blame young insecurities and an insensitive comment for country music being deprived of Yearwood's writing for more than 40 years.

"I've written some over the years, but I always would preface it with, 'I'm not a songwriter,'" Yearwood recalls on the Today Show. "And I think I had this aha moment. I turned 60 last year, and I highly recommend it. Everything sort of opened up. Somebody had told me in college that I was not a songwriter, some guy. And bless his heart ... he probably wouldn't even remember saying it."

Yearwood is grateful for her career so far, and the songs she has recorded. Still, she feels a new level of connection now that she has written all of the songs on The Mirror.

"For the last 30 years I could always go, 'That's a really personal song, but I didn't write it, so it's not about me,'" Yearwood says. "And now everything has a little piece of me in it ... It's just another layer when you actually have a hand in writing the song."

Yearwood has already received high praise for her songwriting from one important person: her husband, Garth Brooks.

"I've never been more excited for you, Trisha Yearwood," Brooks shares on social media. "You've outdone yourself! The Mirror is my FAVORITE album you have EVER made...the world is lucky to hear your voice, your stories and your soul in this way. This album, like you, is a gift to all of us! Love, me."
