I know, I was just as surprised as you all are. Sturgill Simpson and Kesha were never a duo that I'd bet on happening. But there is no mistaking the talent they both have. And combining it? Yeah, this song was always going to be a banger. What helps even more is the incredibly potent meaning that lies behind the lyrics and message of the song. Instant classic.

The Backstory For Kesha
Yeah, this song was not created lightly. It was one of the songs that came out to help Kesah deal with the multi-year lawsuit she was filing. Against one of her former producers. Yeah, insane.
The suit happened in 2014, and the two didn't reach a settlement until 2023. It was a decades-long process during which both sides were subject to an intense amount of hate and backlash.
In the initial suit, Kesha claims against Dr. Luke, her former producer, were not light. She accused him of sexual, physical, emotional, and verbal abuse. Then she obviously attempted to break contact with the label entirely. But going through a lawsuit doesn't really lend itself to distance.
Luckily, she had her music to turn to, and turn to it she did, creating an amazing tune in "Resentment".
"Resentment" For What She Was Going Through
The 2019 instant classic came with a very heartfelt Instagram post from the musician. In the post, she detailed how much the song meant to her and why releasing it was so important.
