Morgan Wallen Opens Up About The Importance of Christianity in His Music

Morgan Wallen tends to keep his music pretty simple. If it's not about drinking or the one that got away or a toxic relationship, he doesn't have much to say. That's fine, for the most part, that's his specialty. You can't always trust artists to swing too deep out of their wheelhouse. However, amidst all the lady problems and booze, he wants one thing to be known: he's a Christian.

This isn't too surprising for Wallen. His music has its fair share of offhand references to Jesus and the occasional religious imagery. Ultimately, though, it helps accentuate his biggest thematic constant: he's not a perfect person. Even on his simplest hits, it's abundantly clear that Wallen's a screwup. His latest song with Post Malone "I Ain't Comin' Back" demonstrates this seamlessly. Morgan sings in the hook, "Now I'm walkin' on this water mixed with Johnnie Walker Black. There's a lot of reasons I ain't Jesus, but the main one is that I ain't comin' back."

Morgan Wallen Wants to Remind People He's a Christian in His Music

These lines may not pop off the page or off the track. Regardless, Morgan finds it particularly important for people to understand that he's of the Christian faith. Recently, Wallen spoke about his collaboration with Post Malone and how it compares with their first outing "I Had Some Help." Initially, "I Ain't Comin' Back" might've ended up on Post's album instead. "'I Ain't Comin' Back' with Post on it. This was written during the time when Post was working on his album. I've always loved this song, and I told him, 'Hey, if you don't put this on your album, then I'm gonna put it on mine,'" Wallen says.

Then, Morgan emphasizes how much he loves the song he kept and how he found it important to include religious imagery. "And 'I Had Some Help' just seemed like an obvious, straight down the middle, this song is a hit kind of song, so he ended up putting that on his record. But I love this song too," Wallen says. "I love what it says, there's a lot of cool imagery. And, you know, me as a Christian, I think anytime I can throw little hints of that in my music, I'm all for it."
