David Bowie's Daughter Is Following In His Footsteps But Don't Compare Her To Her Old Man

For the child of a superstar, there are certainly pressures and scrutinies that most people don't have to deal with. Now, I'm no fan of nepo babies, but it can't be easy for someone like David Bowie's daughter to step from the shadow of her father and become her own artist.

Artistic talent is often inherited, and when someone is brought up in a musical household, it can sometimes rub off. There are plenty of cases of kids following in their parents' footsteps and becoming equally successful. Just look at Miley Cyrus. Although, maybe give Trace Cyrus a miss.

Lexi Jones, the youngest daughter of David Bowie and his wife Iman, has just released her debut album. She is trying desperately not to be compared to her father and instead be understood as her own person. She recently took to Instagram to pen a little poem about her struggle.

"I'm the daughter of a legend, but I'm more than just his name. They see the blood, they hear the sound, yet fail to see me, don't feel the same," she posted. It's important that she has acknowledged her heritage, but, understandably, she wants to be seen as independent.

She goes on to explain that she's not trying to ride his coattails. She is on her own journey. "But I'm not here to chase what's already been done. By loving what I do, I feel I've already won." For David Bowie's daughter, it's all about enjoying what she's doing.

Lexi Jones Breaks Away From David Bowie's Shadow

Her album, titled Xandri, hasn't blown up the way you would expect the daughter of a legend would. It is still pretty unheard of but certainly worth a listen. It has a very mellow vibe and really showcases her vocals.

Some people have pointed out the similarities to David Bowie's music, but as a girl, she was surrounded by it, so it would be weird if a little of his style didn't rub off on her. However, I think she has her own unique sound. If she was trying to emulate her father, it would be glaringly obvious. David Bowie is too unique to be subtly copied.

I hope Lexi Jones can break away from the title of David Bowie's daughter and can make her own path. There is a lot to be said for growing up in an artistic family. And, it appears, she hasn't used his fame to promote her own.
