Blink 182 Frontman Says He Sank Into Depression After Band Broke Up

When you spend such a long time with someone, it tears your world apart when they're gone. This is true for any relationship, romantic and platonic alike. This is especially true when you're a band of friends making music and money together. A band like Blink 182 skyrocketed very quickly and with that comes a ton of pressure and disagreements along the way. Guitarist Tom DeLonge in particular ends up ditching the band in 2005 to start his own after frictions with the band.

Typically, everyone would go their separate ways and find new creative ventures. That definitely happens but not without its own problems. Recently, PEOPLE shared an excerpt of Blink 182 frontman Mark Hoppus' memoir Fahrenheit-182. There, Hoppus admits that when the group fractured, he spiraled into a dark depression. "When Blink fell apart, I lost everything. I lost my direction, I lost my confidence, I lost my sense of self," he writes.

"I didn't know what I was supposed to do or who I was supposed to be. I'd hear one of our songs playing in a store and have to walk out," Hoppus continues. "I sank lower and lower. I could tell I was near the bottom when I started finding comfort in the thought of suicide: If it gets bad enough, I can always just kill myself."

Eventually, Mark finds help amidst the turbulent times post Blink 182. Prescription medication ends up bringing him on the right path in the end. "I started talking to a psychiatrist who put me on medications, which helped a lot," Hoppus recalls. "It let me take a breath. It allowed me the space in my own head to say, 'You're being a d-k, Mark. Knock it off.'"

Eventually, Tom DeLonge returns to the fold in 2009 before departing once again in 2015. In 2023, the guitarist rejoins Blink 182 once again.
