It may shock many of you to know that the "Yodeling Walmart Kid" viral clip was seven years ago, and that kid is now an adult at 18 years old. Mason Ramsey and Harper Grace recently released "Live Lonely," a beautiful track that haunts the hurt hearts.
I had the pleasure of speaking with both Ramsey and Harper Grace, where I got to ask both of them about their viral pasts. When asking Ramsey about the point he felt he turned from viral novelty to a musician, he had a lot to say.
"From 2018 to 2022 ... I was a really young man," he recalled. "I was still in that 'meme world,' or 'TikTok trend world' or whatever."
At the time, he was signed on and pushed out a handful of singles while the iron was hot. It was a smart move, but not something he could keep doing forever.
"I could kinda relate, but I couldn't kinda relate to the music," he said, which is only natural considering how young he was.
"It was just kinda like the sign-off of the commercial country thing," he reflected. And soon, he was ready to really make a name for himself.
Mason Ramsey Says That "Come Pick Me Up" Was His Turning Point
"I'd say in like 2023, I started to transition and start focusing on the next step," Ramsey reflected.
He called the transition from 'Walmart Kid' to Mason Ramsey a "gradual" one, especially as he was finding his footing and finding out what "sounds" he likes, and what he "[wants] to write about."
In 2024, he "took that step," and met with his producer, Dan Fernandez. "I started writing with him. We wrote a whole album together.
They wrote the "Come Pick Me Up" album, which released in August 2024. That's when things really took off for Ramsey. His single, released before the album, "Blue Over You" performed ridiculously well, and was a defining moment for him
So to answer my question, Ramsey summed up, "I say around like 2023, like the Fall of 2023, whenever I put out my EP then to now" was the stretch of time he felt himself really mature as an artist.
"And that was just the new direction."
