Oftentimes, it can be overlooked just how important it is to get your checkup at the doctor's office. You never really know what your body is going through until someone tells you. We might notice something is slightly off but never enough to really follow up on it. Until it's a disaster, our instincts tell us not to worry about it. For athletes like Dwyane Wade, he would frequently get these checkups. The training staff would assure that he would always be in the peak physical condition. However, once he retired after the 2018-19 NBA season, his checkups slowed down. Now, he's revealing why he regrets stopping.

Recently, the iconic Miami Heat guard went on his The Why with Dwyane Wade podcast. There, he candidly talks about a health scare that he battled in private over a year ago. Wade went to go get a full body scan to make sure he's good and healthy. However, the doctors tell him about a tumor on one of his kidneys and how he needed to have surgery immediately.
Dwyane Wade Talks About Terrifying Health Scare That Required Surgery
Dwyane only went to the doctor because he was experiencing stomach cramps and trouble peeing. His urine was coming out too slow and considerably weak. In the surgery, they had to remove a strong portion of his left kidney. Wade talks about how frail he felt in those moments and how it bothered him to feel that way. "I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak," Dwyane recalls. "That moment was probably the weakest point I've ever felt in my life... I was struggling, dog. Struggling. "And one thing you never want to do as a man is you never want your family to see you as weak. You don't want to be perceived weak, and you don't want to be seen in your weak moments. But I had to."
Dwyane didn't expand too much on his current health status. Hell, it took long enough to learn he had a cancerous tumor in his kidney. However, he does express that the health scare gave him clarity to get his checkups and to lean on his family even more. "What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family," Wade says.
