The Grand Ole Opry Is A Hallowed Place In Country Music
It Is An Honor To Be A Member
Per American Songwriter, "The Grand Ole Opry is arguably the highest honor a country musician can receive...However, there are a pair of musicians who could care less about being members. Those two are none other than George Strait and Willie Nelson."
Why are these two giants of country music not interested in the Opry? Well, for one thing, per the outlet, "Both Strait and Nelson performed at the venue but saw the membership as a major inconvenience due to the commitment it entailed." These are really busy people!
Both George Strait And Willie Nelson Are Based In The Lone Star State
It Would Be Hard For Them To Commit To Several Shows A Year At The Opry
Living in Texas, it would be challenging for these singers to commit to doing 10 shows annually at the Opry, which is a requisite of membership. So considering their schedules and the traveling time involved, it might be just not doable. In fact, six years ago, Willie Nelson shared with the Texas Standard exactly why it is not realistic for him to join the Opry. "You can't play in Texas on Friday and get back to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night. It just don't work out that way," Nelson said to the Texas Standard via American Songwriter.
George Strait has not spoken quite as forthrightly about this as Nelson has. Still, he is thought to have a similar rationale for not clamoring to join the Opry.
