One recipe she shared during an interview was for Stone Soup. You're probably familiar with the children's book, Stone Soup by Marcia Brown. There are a few versions of the story, but the common one is about two hungry soldiers who stop at a village with an empty cooking pot. The villagers won't share any of their food with the soldiers, so they decide to fill the pot with water and a magic stone. Of course, the villagers are curious and eventually add various ingredients to the pot, which eventually creates a delicious soup.
However, Dolly's story of Stone Soup is a little different. Her mother, Avie Lee wanted to get Dolly and her eleven siblings involved in making dinner, so she would send each of her children outside to search for the perfect stone. The stones were then presented to their mother and the winner chosen for the soup was carefully picked by Dolly's mother. Of course, being their mother, Avie Lee knew what was going on in her children's lives. Whether they were struggling, having a tough day or just need some extra special attention.
To make that child feel better, their stone was chosen that say for Stone Soup. How sweet is that? Take a look at the video below.
To make Dolly's Stone Soup recipe, you'll need a large cooking pot for all of the ingredients. Add chicken stock, potatoes, canned tomatoes, cabbage, turnips, carrots, a medium onion, garlic and a smoked ham hock to the pot. Oh, and a clean, round stone! Of course, this is totally optional.
