Being hit by one car is unlucky enough, but two is unimaginable. Frances Rickard was on her evening walk through New York at around 5:40 p.m. As she crossed the road on York Avenue and East 72nd Street she was hit by the first of the two cars.
The first was a taxi cab pulling a U-Turn. The 68-year-old cab driver somehow managed to not see the elderly woman and knocked her over with his car. Only moments later, another car hit her.
An SUV driven by a 38-year-old woman was unable to see Rickard and hit her with a second vehicle. Both of the two cars she was hit by were deemed unintentional, and neither driver is being charged with the incident. It was simply a terrible and incredibly unfortunate accident.
Two Cars Sent 90-Year-Old Woman To The Emergency Room
Despite being hit by two cars, Frances Rickard didn't die on the scene. She was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. However, it was too late for the elderly woman, and she died of injuries sustained by the cars.
Both drivers, traumatized by the unfortunate series of events, remained on the scene. They complied fully with the investigations. However, neither is being charged with the death of the 90-year-old woman. But, they will have to live with the terrible accident.
Neither of the maneuvers the drivers performed were considered illegal or dangerous. The situation that resulted in the death of the 90-year-old woman was simply a case of wrong place wrong time. To be hit by two cars one after the other is incredibly unlucky. But, in a place as busy as New York the chances are going to be higher.
It is always important to check your surroundings when walking through busy cities. Despite the US having strict jaywalking rules, there is always a chance you could be missed by a driver and end up in a fatal accident.
