It is unknown how the fire started, but that it started around midday according to the body cam footage shared by Arapahoe Sheriff on X. The fire quickly spiralled as thick black smoke erupted from the property.
According to an interview their mother had with CBS News, both of the parents were out of the house at the time. Grayson, 8, called out to his sister, Ava Grace, 14, when he noticed the fire. The blaze was vicious and spreadly aggressively, so he called out to his sister, "Ava, Ava!"
Apparently, he kept calling his sister's name, who was a floor below him. Without his quick warning cries, their response may not have been so quick.
Ava Grace called the police and jumped out of a window to escape. Grayson left using a side door.
"He kind of saved her life. He's our hero," the exhausted mother told the outlet.
Two Children Rescued From Housefire After Quick Response And Initiative
The body cam footage shows two deputies rushing around the property to get to the two kids.
They climbed over and broke through a fence to quickly access and retrieve the kids. They carried and hurried the kids away from the house as they were brought to their parents. The event was clearly harrowing and terrifying for the children.
The brutal fire has tragically cost the family their pet dog. Two kittens are also missing, according to the outlet. It's unknown whether they escaped or became victims of the house fire.
The smoke bellowing out of the property was so fierce that the responding officers had to be treated. "Both deputies both suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene by paramedics," the statement by Arapahoe Sheriff stated.
According to the
South Metro Fire Rescue, the children were also treated. The fire was rapid. Without the quick initiative from Grayson, more damage could have been sustained.
