According to San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus, police responded to a call of "suicide in progress" in the Stone Oak neighborhood. The responding officer ended up needing help himself, taking a gunshot wound for his trouble.
"The first officer who arrived was shot and six others subsequent to that were shot as well," McManus said.
The San Antonio police chief updated the number of police officers wounded in the exchange. Initially, he said only four cops had been injured. However, that number was updated to seven. The conditions of all the officers are unknown at this time.
The gunman ended up barricading himself inside an apartment in a tense standoff with SWAT. So far, officers haven't released the identity of the suspect. However, they confirm that he had priors and had just been arrested last Saturday for assault and DWI charges.
7 San Antonio Police Officers Shot
"At the end of the event, the suspect was found to be deceased. We don't know if he was shot by a self-inflicted wound or whether or not he was shot by SWAT officers," McManus said.
Meanwhile, a resident at the apartment complex, Joseph Loredo, opened up about what he saw. He said that he heard an initial pop then more gunfire a short time later. Upon exiting his apartment, he saw a San Antonio police officer down.
"When I went outside, I saw one of SAPD officers had been shot," he told KENS TV. "It looked like a leg wound because they were putting a tourniquet on him and then they dragged him away."
More police responded after that. Finally, he said he saw the SWAT team show up at the situation. It turns out that his apartment was actually in the crossfire. So he ended up evacuating.
Loredo said after the initial shooting, he saw more San Antonio Police officers arrive, as well as Bexar County Sheriff's deputies and finally the SWAT team.
"I caught on video when (police) was actually firing back," he said. "Then I saw the (shooter) actually shoot a few of the officers. I witness this. That is when SAPD actually returned fire."
