An investigation by the Guardian revealed that 7-Eleven and Circle K have been overcharging customers for years, including food and alcohol sales.
The investigation discovered widespread false advertising at both chains, with customers being charged more than the prices listed on shelves and sale signs.
Furthermore, these price discrepancies greatly differed state to state.
The report found Circle K failed 35 percent of price-accuracy inspections in Florida, 62 percent in North Carolina, and 82 percent in Columbus, Ohio, between 2023 and 2025.
7-Eleven also failed price-accuracy inspections at an alarming rate.
The Slurpee-serving store failed 47 percent of inspections in Colorado and Utah and a whopping 79 percent in Ontario County, New York.
7-Eleven, Circle K Face Damning Allegations
Both convenience stores released statements following the investigation.
"Delivering value and maintaining trust amongst our customers is a top priority. We take pricing accuracy very seriously," a spokesperson for 7-Eleven said, per the Guardian.
A spokesperson for Circle K said that the company is "committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations". The spokesperson said the chain's mission "is to make our customers' lives a little easier every day. So their satisfaction is a top priority. We take customer concerns seriously and are always working to improve their experience in our stores."
For Circle K, this is not the first time this year the franchise made headlines for overcharging customers.
Over the summer, a Circle K shopper was promoted to make an $8 billion dollar donation while purchasing hot dogs.
During checkout, an AI-powered self-checkout kiosk added an $8 billion donationto a customer's order. The shopper shared a picture of the staggering donation amount on Reddit, saying, "I just wanted a hot dog."
According to the customer, the kiosk prompted him to make a multi-billion-dollar donation to the Red Cross.
"Yesterday, tho, it threw this little gem in thinking I wouldn't notice an $8.5 Billion Donation to the Red Cross," they wrote. "Don't get me wrong, I like what they do and all, but this is a bit much."
