6-Year-Old Dies After Climbing Into A Barrel And Getting Trapped

A 6-year-old girl perished in a heartbreaking accident after becoming trapped inside a barrel while playing outside her Mississippi home. Authorities said that Gracelynn Vick died on Sunday, April 13, in Harrison County. During a press conference on Thursday, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office ruled out foul play.

Sheriff Matt Haley labeled the incident a "tragic accident." While playing, the girl crawled into an empty barrel on her family's farm, and the lid closed, trapping her. "We found no evidence of foul play," Haley told reporters. "Moreover, security cameras monitored the area where the barrel was located."

Security Footage Clarifies Tragedy

Video evidence provided critical insight. "After reviewing the footage multiple times, we confirmed Gracelynn entered the barrel herself and closed the lid, which jammed and trapped her," Haley explained. According to the Biloxi Sun Herald, the barrel, typically used for animal feed, stood empty that day.

Furthermore, the footage revealed no one approached the barrel until Gracelynn's family began their search. "No one could access that area without appearing on camera," Haley said. An autopsy supported these findings, showing no signs of trauma, abuse, or neglect.

Around noon, the girl started playing outside and soon vanished. Consequently, deputies, volunteers, and authorities launched a search using helicopters, ATVs, and foot patrols. They found her around 6 p.m., and officials pronounced her dead.

Community Faces Ongoing Sorrow

Extreme heat likely contributed to the tragedy, Haley noted. "Given Sunday's heat index, Gracelynn likely suffered heat stress and limited oxygen inside the barrel," he said. "This resembles a child stuck in a hot car during summer." Meanwhile, investigators continue to pinpoint the precise cause of death.

Tragically, this loss compounds the family's grief. In 2023, Gracelynn's 13-year-old sister, Victoria, died in a crash, and in 2021, her 17-year-old brother, Larry Hart, passed away from a medical condition, the Biloxi Sun Herald reported.

Sheriff Haley expressed deep personal sorrow. "This week has been incredibly tough," he said. "Gracelynn and my granddaughter were school friends. It's been hard on my family and our team."

As the community grieves, officials urge residents to avoid spreading rumors. "We hope these details dispel the many rumors circulating on social media," Haley said.
