According to People, the incident occurred on February 12 at the Pittman Park Education Center in Georgia. The child agency said the 6-month-old infant "was placed in a bouncy seat and later became unresponsive while being attended to by staff."
Emergency services responded to a call from the daycare center at around 12:30, promptly taking the child to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Doctors reportedly transferred the infant to Memorial Medical Center Children's Hospital. Unfortunately, they died on Monday, February 17.
Per a report by WTOC, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning said in a statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident reported by the Pittman Park Education Center in Statesboro that occurred on February 12, 2025, involving an infant in their care.
According to initial reports, the child was placed in a bouncy seat and later became unresponsive while being attended to by staff. Emergency services were immediately contacted, and the child was transported to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, the child sadly passed away on February 17, 2025."
State Officials Are Investigating The Death Of The 6-Month-Old
Per a report by WJCL, state officials and police are now investigating the toddler's death. Captain Jared Akins of the Statesboro Police told the outlet in an interview:
"We keep an open mind with any of them. We don't pre-judge anything until the evidence comes out, the interviews are done, (and) the medical exam is complete."
Akins also explains why the investigation may take some time. "You have to kind of establish a baseline on the child. The child's health, the child's behavior, and people's interactions with the child. There's just a lot of things that go into it."
The outlet also reports that police arrested a former Pittman Park Education Center staff member in July 2024. The ex-worker allegedly 'popped a child on the ankle' because they wouldn't put their shoes on. The staff member no longer works at Pittman Park, and the establishment is in good standing with the state.
When asked if there was a possible link or continued threat to children at the daycare center, Akins firmly replied that whatever happened was very specific to the toddler.
