4 Delicious Hot Toddy Recipes That Will Banish Your Cold

The first cold breeze of winter seems to always bring sniffles and a sore throat along with it. What helps a sore throat? There's nothing better than a good hot drink to numb the pain. (Please do not microwave your Dayquil.)

It also means you have a killer excuse to break out your favorite bottle of whiskey, bourbon, brandy, or rum. A hot toddy cocktail actually makes a difference when you're under the weather. Some recent studies suggest grandma's original hot toddy recipe really does ease cold symptoms (yay science). These four cocktail recipes give a slightly different spin on the classic feel-good beverage, which is enjoyable during the winter even if you don't have a cold.

The Original

Hot Toddy IngredientsLet's start things off on this traditional American cocktail. If you haven't learned to make the classic hot toddy yet, here's your chance.

  • 3 tablespoons whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup hot water

Place the whiskey, honey and lemon juice in your favorite mug. Meanwhile, heat up the water to boiling in a kettle. Pour the boiling water over the ingredients in the mug and stir. Add a lemon slice or more honey to taste if you like it a little sweeter or brighter.

Sweet Bourbon Toddy

Hot Toddy IngredientsThis sweet spin on the original hot toddy is a delicious alternative for those who prefer their warm drinks taste just like dessert.

  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 3 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1 strip of lemon peel
  • 1 splash of apple cider (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Mix together the honey and hot water in a mug until combined. Add the bourbon and stir. Place the lemon peel in the drink. Add about a tablespoon of apple cider into the mug if you like your drink on the sweeter side. Stir the ingredients together with a cinnamon stick and enjoy.

Apple Pie Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy Ingredients

This delicious twist on the classic remedy tastes like dessert and relaxation in a mug.

  • 2-3 tablespoons brandy or dark rum (you can get fancy and add apple brandy instead)
  • 1 cup water
  • Tiny pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 Star anise
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 lemon wedge

Stir together the brandy (or rum) and hot water in a mug. Add the tiniest dash of ground nutmeg (believe me, you don't want to overdo the nutmeg). Drop a star anise into the mix along with a splash of apple cider for a sweet fix. Stir the honey into the mixture with your cinnamon sticks and finish off with a quick squeeze of lemon. Voila!

Maple Ginger Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy IngredientsThis is one of best hot toddy recipes if you love the maple flavor. The extra element of the tea bags really rounds this out to be an excellent winter drink.

  • 2 bags ginger tea
  • 1 1/2 ounces whiskey (or maple-flavored bourbon for some extra flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • Lemon peel (for garnish)

Pour the boiling water over your tea bags and let it steep for a few minutes. Remove the tea bags and still in the rest of your ingredients. Finish it off when a lemon slice or peel for garnish and you're all set.
