2023 Emmy Awards Postponed Due to Writer and Actor Strikes

It's unclear when they will be rescheduled.

The date for the 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony is officially up in the air. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed this week that the 75th annual Emmy Awards show — initially set for Sept. 18 — is being postponed due to the ongoing actors' and writers' strikes.

Currently, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) after it failed to reach a new minimum bargaining agreement (MBA) with the WGA by May 1. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) then announced its own strike on July 13 after its negotiations for member actors failed to go through. The Emmy Awards were likely postponed due in part to SAG-AFTRA's strike rules, which reportedly prohibits member actors from promoting or doing publicity for "struck companies." WGA's strike rules prohibit writers from working on certain projects, and the Emmy Awards may fall under that stipulation.

This is the first time since 2001 the ceremony has been postponed. It was delayed to November that year due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were announced on July 12. Television shows that lead the nominations are Succession, The Last of UsThe White Lotus and Ted Lasso. Despite the fact that the date for the Emmys is uncertain, voting for the awards show is still underway. The final phase of voting begins on Aug. 17.

"We are thrilled with the historic level of participation from our voting members this Emmy season," said Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma upon announcing the nominees. "As we approach the remarkable milestone of the Emmy's 75th anniversary, the Academy is more appreciative than ever of another year of extraordinary content. We are honored to recognize those who have elevated the world's favorite global medium."

The TV Academy and Fox Television have not yet shared the new date for the awards.
