The incident happened in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, January 14. The toddler in question "suffered a fatal medical episode" at the Early Learners Day Nursery. The preschool is located in Bootle, Liverpool. In a release, Merseyside Police confirmed confirmed the tragic passing of the 2-year-old.
They responded to the scene around noon after someone from the school called emergency services. The toddler was having a full-scale medical episode.
"The child was taken to the hospital by paramedics," the release said. "He was sadly pronounced deceased at the hospital and his family is being supported."
Death At A Preschool
At this time, police aren't sure what caused the boy's death. The death is "currently being treated as unexplained." Meanwhile, police are working to "to establish the full circumstances and cause of death."
The mystery deepens a bit. The preschool appears to have taken down its social media page after the death. Likewise, it closed it's doors until further notice, likely to cooperate with the investigation. The preschool has been open since 1994. Overall, it had a rating of good by the U.K.'s Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted).
After the tragic death of the toddler, the preschool sent a statement to parents. It informed the parents of the tragedy. The school also mentioned it was temporarily closing to allow families to grieve and process.
"Dear parents and carers, as you are aware, this afternoon a medical emergency occurred at the nursery. It is with devastating sadness that we have to inform you of a child's passing," it read.
"To enable everyone to process today's tragic events, we have made the decision to close the nursery for the remainder of the week, and also to allow us to continue working with relevant agencies," the message added.
"We trust that you understand our decision at this difficult time and we will update you all with further information in the coming days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," it concluded.
