The Pickens County Coroner's Office said a 16-year-old has died after crashing a UTV on Sunday night.

Cruz Ellenburg, a high school football player, was killed in a crash just before 5 PM Sunday, according to FOX Carolina.
Ellenburg was on a UTV when he veered off the road onto private property and rolled over, the coroner said. The student-athlete was unrestrained and pronounced dead at the scene.
"The School District of Pickens County is deeply saddened to confirm that Cruz Evatt Ellenburg, a 10th-grade student at Pickens High School, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following an ATV collision on private property," the school district said in a statement, according to FOX Carolina.
"Our hearts are with Cruz's family, friends, classmates, and the entire Pickens High School community during this very difficult time."
The school district also shared that counselors will be available to students and staff navigating the tragedy.
"Counselors and additional district support personnel are available at Pickens High School beginning today for students and staff members who may need support. We encourage families to speak with their children. And to reach out to the school if additional support is needed," the school district stated.
Ellenburg played quarterback at Pickens High last season and was playing receiver for the Blue Flame this season.
"Cruz Ellenburg was a bright light in our school, community, and football program," Pickens High football coach James Reynolds said. "He was a dedicated player, teammate, and friend to many.
"Our team will miss his infectious smile, energy, and talents. His memory will be honored by our hard work as we move forward. Which he no doubt would want us to continue to do."
Beloved Student-Athlete Dies in Car Crash
Earlier this month, Jordan Scott, a sophomore guard for the University of Evansville women's basketball team, died in a car crash.
UE officials confirmed that the two-time All-SIAC first-team selection died on Sunday, Sept. 6.
"A sophomore and member of the Purple Aces women's basketball program, Jordan was a beloved member of the University of Evansville community," the university said.
Scott transferred to UE weeks before her death to play alongside her sister, Jayden.
"Jordan was a meaningful part of the family. Her presence, personality, and spirit made an impact on all of us," UE coach Ben Wierzba told the Courier and Press. "Our hearts are broken for her family. Especially for Jayden. Jordan will always be a part of the Evansville Women's Basketball Program."
