According to Sky News, the incident occurred near Scribers Lane at around 3:40 p.m. A bystander found the wounded boy and paramedics quickly treated him. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital but, unfortunately, the boy died at around 7:30 p.m.
As the 12-year-old was dying in the Hospital, police, who were investigating the boy's death, arrested a 14-year-old at an address in Birmingham. According to the chief superintendent of the Birmingham Local Policing Area, Richard North, the teenager was also arrested in an unrelated case of assault. Reportedly, the 14-year-old also assaulted a woman in her 80s on Sunday.
The investigation continues, and North has asked the public for information and for the media to refrain from speculation. "I would ask the public and the media not to speculate on the motive of this incident," North said in a West Midlands Police statement. "The investigation is in the early stages and we have someone in custody,"
"I would urge anyone who saw what happened, or who has CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area at the time to get in touch with us as soon as possible to help us build as clear a picture as possible," North continued.
A Senseless Attack
West Midlands Police informed the family of the 12-year-old boy about the tragic incident. "This is an appalling and senseless attack," the police statement continues. "We are doing everything we can to support the loved ones of the young boy who lost his life in such an appalling way, but we know that nothing we say or do will diminish their agony."
"Parents around the country will hear this news and be unable to comprehend the pain they must be feeling. Our hearts go out to the young boy's family today."
Currently, police are appealing to anyone with video footage, photos, or any evidence that might contribute to the case to come forward. The 14-year-old suspect remains in custody.
