According to a news release issued by ECSU, the incident took place "In the earñlyu morning hours" of Sunday, April 27. The shooting occurred in the quad in the center of ECSU's campus, following the Yard Fest. Six individuals were injured as a result, with four of them sustaining gunshot wounds. Out of those four, three of them were ECSU students.

A 24-year-old man, yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not an ECSU student, and his identity will remain unknown until his next of kin are notified.

Following the shooting, ECSU went on lockdown, which was lifted later on Sunday after law enforcement secured the area.

"As a precaution, ECSU has increased patrols across campus, and access to the center of campus will remain restricted throughout Sunday," ECSU added.

Currently, there is no information available about the suspect or suspects that might have carried out the shooting.

Students React

Several ECSU students talked with WMGT, detailing how the shooting went down and how they reacted. One of the witnesses is Mark Hurlbut, who heard the shots through his window.

"I heard the gunshots through my window and through the walls," Hurlbut said. "It finally clicked. This happened right outside my door."

Similarly, Jamarin Johnson, another ECSU student, also detailed the incident, stating that he was praying for the victims and their families.

"It was scary for real," Johnson said. "I was over there talking to one of my friends, and I saw a lot of people running."

Zion Upchurch, thankfully, left campus before the shooting took place. However, as it went down, he heard the shots from his dorm.

"I had left right before all of this transpired, but I had heard the gunshots from my dorm," Upchurch said. "And then I got a phone call saying some people had been shot."

According to CNN, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the incident alongside local authorities. They are currently asking for information and footage in connection with the shooting.
