You may know Zac Brown for his incredible music, but you might not know about his passion for helping special needs kids. A former summer camp counsellor himself, Brown has put a lot of effort into helping create Camp Southern Ground, a summer camp in Peachtree City, Georgia, that serves kids from all backgrounds who have special needs. The camp particularly focuses on children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and learning differences.
On the Camp Southern Ground website, Brown says, “As a former camp counselor, I know how a positive camp experience can transform a child’s life. My dream is that children of all abilities will have an opportunity to experience the magic of the outdoors.”
The camp is currently in its development phase, and is still seeking funding. However, they were able to hold a soft launch of the camp, a “Mini Adventure Weekend” this past September for 30 kids. Camp Southern Ground has since hosted four total Mini Adventure Weekends to test out various programs.
Camp Southern Ground also partnered with Boot Campaign, an organization that aids military families with PTSD treatment and education to career funding. Boot Campaign and Camp Southern Ground aligned with the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation to create Boots on Southern Ground, which provides scholarships to military families, and contributed to building Camp Southern Ground’s military-inspired adventure course.
Zac Brown Band has always been a huge military supporter, having participated in numerous USO tours at military bases all over the world.
Along with the Adventure Center, Camp Southern Ground includes an amphitheater, an aquatics center, an art center, a chapel, an organic farm, a music center, and multiple hiking and nature trails.
