The World’s Spiciest Tortilla Chip is Sold in a Tiny Coffin

If you think a packet of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos is too spicy for your liking, you might as well stop reading here. The Carolina Reaper Madness Chip hit the market this year. And it’s so hot, you can only buy them one at a time.

The Carolina Reaper Madness chip is dusted with ghost pepper, chipotle flavor and real Carolina Reaper peppers.

If you haven’t heard of the Carolina Reaper, it is the hottest pepper anywhere. It rates over 1.5 million Scoville units. In comparison, the ghost pepper rates around 1 million and cayenne only rates around 50,000.

That trio of pain-inducing heat inspired Doug Lyon, the founder of Paqui Chips, to wrap this chip in a single packet. And if that’s not enough of a warning for you, then the chip also rests in a tiny coffin-shaped box with clear indications this chip will burn.

The intense heat of this gourmet experience apparently doesn’t kick in for about 30 seconds. So, those brave souls out there who think they can handle the heat initially find out too late that they can’t.

BuzzFeed rounded up a few people to showcase how the intense heat builds after chowing down on a Carolina Reaper Madness Chip:

The creators not only had to wear gas masks as they developed the seasoning, they also had to time the production with the pepper season. According to Forbes, Paqui produced 50,000 of these tear-inducing products. And the seasoning contains as many as 17 peppers on each chip.

They spent months preparing the peppers and blending the perfect spice mixture. The chip hit stores on October 3 and costs $4.99 for one seriously painful ride for your taste buds.
