World’s Oldest Person Celebrates 116th Birthday

Jeralean Talley beat the odds. At the age of 116, she is officially the world’s oldest person.

May 23 is a big day for Jeralean Talley.

The date marks Talley’s 116th birthday, which is no easy achievement. Talley was born in Montrose, Georgia in 1899, and according to gerontology experts, she is now the world oldest person. She already beat the odds just by reaching the age of 110, which only one in 5 million Americans live to see.

Talley moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1935, and overall, her life was and continues to be simple and fulfilling. According to news station 11 Alive, her husband, Alfred, passed away in 1988.

Thelma Holloway, Talley’s 77-year-old daughter, lives with her and attends to her needs. Outside of family life, Talley attends church and tries to stay as active as possible.

What is Talley’s secret for living so long? Is it something in their family’s genes? According to Holloway, many of Talley’s 11 siblings lived well into their 90s. However, Talley’s official answer to everyone’s burning question was short and sweet.

“It’s all in the good Lord’s hands,” she said. “There’s nothing I can do about it.”
