Nelson’s annual outdoor music festival has come a long way since it began in 1973. Just a few years after Woodstock, Nelson organized the first one in Dripping Springs, Texas, just a few miles outside of Austin.

“I got the idea from Woodstock about how music could bring people from different places together,” Nelson said of the event, according to Rolling Stone. “I had just moved to Austin and had come to realize what a great music center it was and could be. I thought it would be a nice idea to this year have it back in Austin.”

Over the decades, the picnic has been held at a few different locations across the Lone Star State, most recently at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth. This year the festival will take place at one of Austin’s newest venues, the Austin360 Amphitheater at the Circuit of the Americas Formula One race track.

Tickets go on sale April 10 and will range from $35-$75. You can count on us being there.
