Trisha Yearwood used the power of music to provide a memorable portrayal of Mary, mother of Jesus, during last night’s production of The Passion Live.
On March 20, the country star performed covers of popular songs to help convey the emotion that Mary endured during her son’s arrest, trial, and crucifixion.
Clad in a flowing dark blue gown, Yearwood stood in front of a huge audience along the New Orleans riverfront. Between musical breaks, aerial shots showed a large glowing cross being carried throughout the city until it eventually reached the stage. During her rendition of “Broken,” Yearwood stayed close to the cross, representing the powerful bond she felt for her son.
Yearwood also supplied a soaring rendition of Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love,” Jewel’s “My Hands,” Ray Charles’ “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and a somber reimagining of Jason Mraz’s pop hit, “I Won’t Give Up” during the musical event.
The Passion Live was narrated and hosted by actor Tyler Perry, and also starred Chris Daughtry as Judas, British singer-songwriter Seal as Pontius Pilate, and Christian singer Michael W. Smith as a disciple.
