Just hours after the news of Merle Haggard’s passing spread across the world, Tim McGraw and his band paid tribute to the country legend with a rendition of his classic hit, “Workin’ Man Blues.”
On April 6, McGraw posted a video showing himself and eight of his bandmates as they gathered around in a practice space with instruments in hand. The impromptu jam session is full of energy and puts an inspired new spin on Haggard’ 1969 classic. It’s not often that you get to see McGraw perform in such a loose and spirited way, but his love for the song and its original singer shined through in a big way.
It’s obvious that Haggard’s life and music made a huge impact on McGraw, who also changed his official website to show the words “Merle Haggard, April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016” before showing his own content.
Haggard passed away on April 6, his 79th birthday, following an ongoing battle with pneumonia. He was laid to rest in aprivate ceremony over the weekend at his Palo Cedro, Calif. home.
