Running out of propane right when you’re about to fire up the grill for a backyard barbecue is the worst, but America’s Test Kitchen has let us in on a quick and easy way to test the level of gas in your tank beforehand so you never put yourself in that situation.
All you have to do is fill a saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Then carefully take the water outside and pour it along the side of the tank. Feel over the side of the tank where you just poured the water. If the area feels warm, that means there is no propane at that level. If the area is cool, then you’re in luck because that means there is still propane in the tank.

With summertime in full swing, you are probably using your grill often so always be sure to keep an eye on your gas level. If most of the area is warm to the touch, you may want to think about making a trip to the store. No one wants to run out of gas in the middle of cooking. Unless well, you like your burgers rare.
