Sturgill Simpson takes a hard look at the reality of life and death in his macabre new video for “Brace For Impact (Live a Little).”

The release comes just a week after the Kentucky native announced the details of his upcoming album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, along with his new single. The song’s alt-rock edge combined with lyrics about enjoying life while you still can gives the track a dark and almost spooky quality.

The video’s stark imagery enhances the song’s message by bringing each lyric to life and death.
As you watch the floating illustrations of people being transported into the unknown – which is cleverly represented by a question mark-shaped ship –  it’s hard to stop yourself from thinking about your own mortality. “Make sure you give a little before you go to the great unknown in the sky,” Simpson sings as a cell phone, a pencil and a half-eaten doughnut float past you. It’s a reminder that you can’t take anything with you when that fateful moment comes, so you better enjoy it while you can.
