There aren’t many country singers today who can touch Sturgill Simpson’s voice. It can fluidly move from a low range to a higher one without breaking into falsetto. It hits you with power and a wallop of emotion. It has a power that comes straight from his soul, and it spares no time for pretense. In short, Sturgill’s got soul. So, it’s an absolute pleasure to hear him cover one of the greatest soul songs of all time, William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water”.
He performed the song at their show last night in Asheville, North Carolina. Simpson and his band, one of the best outfits on the road — boy, do they make Simpson’s voice shine here — have some incredible covers in their repertoire, including When in Rome’s “The Promise”, T-Rex’s “The Motivator” and the Stanley Brother’s “Medicine Springs”. This one is pretty amazing.
Who knows, maybe this one will make the cut on his next record.
