Sturgill Simpson served as the musical guest on Late Night With Seth Meyers last night and gave an incredible performance of “Welcome to Earth (Pollywog).” The song is a track off of the singer-songwriter’s third and latest album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. Backed by a full string and brass band, Simpson’s magical song sprang to life on the Warner Theater stage.
While the beginning of the performance is calm and hypnotizing, Simpson and the band bring funk and soul to the second half.
Simpson is still enjoying the success of A Sailor’s Guide to Earth after it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts in April — something he claimed he didn’t need the help of any mainstream country music establishment to earn.
The singer made waves last month after making some controversial statements on Facebook knocking the ACM’s new Merle Haggard Award. “They don’t walk it like they talk it,” he explained. Simpson admitted he might be blackballed for his comments, but that’s okay, because he doesn’t need them to succeed.
Simpson is still currently on his Sailor’s Tour all the way through November, with his next stop in Ithaca, N.Y.
