Oh my. If you need more proof of the promising future of country music, just watch this video of two up-and-coming acts singing Chris Stapleton’s “Fire Away.” Maren Morris and the Brothers Osborne performed live at the inaugural Association of Independent Music Publishers Nashville Awards on April 18 at The Ryman.
We love Maren Morris and the Brothers Osborne here at Wide Open Country, and you know we love Chris Stapleton, so it’s a match made in heaven as far as we’re concerned. YouTube user Nick Barnes uploaded a full video of the performance, and even though it’s fan-shot using the camera’s microphone, the quality of the performance is incredible.
For starters, it’s really cool to see Morris take the opening verse and then juxtapose it with TJ Osborne taking the second. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without those killer chorus and bridge harmonies, and a John Osborne guitar solo to boot.
The AIMP Nashville Awards show was invite-only and celebrated independent songwriters and their publishers. It’s co-chaired by Michael Baum of SMACK Songs (Shane McAnally’s independent publishing company) and Ree Buchanan of Wrensong. In a press release, Buchanan said the reason for the awards was simply to recognize independent music in Nashville.
“Michael and I had a dream to create an event that celebrated independent songwriters and their publishers,” says Buchanan. “In Nashville, independents make up more that 50 percent of the market. That should be awarded.”
One great way to do that is have Morris and the Osbornes nail this performance of a Chris Stapleton song — they all forged their paths as independent musicians before signing deals.
