Two of modern country music’s biggest stars paid tribute to George Jones by covering one of his most popular songs.
36 years ago today, Jones hit number one with his now legendary track, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” As the years passed, the song arguably became the most recognizable release of his entire career. When the country legend died of hypoxic respiratory failure on April 26, 2013 at the age of 81, the song reached the No. 21 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, over 33 years after its original release.
Just a few months after Jones’ passing, Strait and Jackson teamed up for a special tribute to Jones and his wife during the 2013 CMA Awards. The result was a show-stopping performance that will go down in history as one of the award show’s most memorable moments.
It’s hard for anyone to take on a classic hit as big as this one, much less a singer as unique as George Jones. Thanks to their incredible amount of combined talent, Strait and Jackson provide an incredibly poignant and fitting tribute to the Possum.
