Trisha Yearwood is taking on a surprising new role for an upcoming live musical.
The country star is set to play Mary, the mother of Jesus, in The Passion, a two-hour live musical event. Yearwood will join the cast which also includes Prince Royce, who plays the role of Peter, and host Tyler Perry.
The Passion was written by Peter Barsocchini, the mastermind behind Disney’s High School Musical. Set in present-day New Orleans, the musical follows the story of Jesus of Nazareth from the Last Supper to his resurrection. According to Music Row, “a procession of hundreds of people carrying a 20-foot, illuminated cross” will move along with the cast as they travel to notable landmarks across the city.
This rather ambitious project seems to be Fox’s attempt to latch onto the stream of inspirational programming that’s been earning success on network channels over the past few years. The Passion appears to be riding the coattails of Dolly Parton’s recent record-breaking TV movie, “Coat of Many Colors,” and Carrie Underwood’s “The Sound of Music Live!” with the hopes of finding similar success.
So will Yearwood and The Passion earn as much praise as their predecessors? Only time will tell.
The Passion will air live on Palm Sunday, March 20, at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
