Devil’s food and red velvet cakes have a reputation as decadent and sinful treats.
But a truly indulgent cake needs a splash of Tennessee whiskey or a nip of bourbon.
Whip up this playful recipe adapted from Love and Olive Oil. It incorporates chocolate, your favorite southern whiskey and a drizzle of alcohol-infused chocolate sauce. Your next guests are in for a seriously wicked treat.
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup dark cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup whole buttermilk or half and half
- 3/4 cup freshly brewed coffee
- 1/4 cup Tennessee whiskey or bourbon
- 5 ounces dark chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons whiskey
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 10-inch round pan or a bundt pan.
Combine the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pepper and ground cloves in a bowl.
Whisk together the eggs and vanilla in a separate bowl. Add the oil and buttermilk (or half and half) to this wet mixture.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix together with an electric mixer until just combined. Don’t worry about any tiny lumps.
Add the coffee and whiskey to the batter and mix until just incorporated.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for around 50 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Set up a double boiler and melt the chocolate chips and set aside.
Mix together milk and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Stir together until the sugar dissolves.
Add the melted chocolate to the milk and sugar mixture and combine.
Let the mixture cool for about 15 minutes and then add your whiskey, along with the cream, to the sauce.
Drizzle the chocolate sauce over the fresh cake and dust the whole confection with a little powdered sugar. Or you can sprinkle some pecans over the top for a nutty texture.
