Fans of HGTV’s Fixer Upper know plenty about its stars, Chip and Joanna Gaines. For instance, Chip loves shiplap and demo day, and Joanna loves knocking out walls and metal quote signs. But do you know the story of how they met and fell in love? It’s just as adorable as you might imagine.
Joanna and Chip officially met in 2001, but their paths crossed on multiple occasions before then. Coincidentally, Joanna and Chip both attended Baylor University. They didn’t know one another at the time, but Chip graduated in 1998 and Joanna in 2001.
Joanna’s father, Jerry Stevens, owned an auto shop in Waco that Chip was a customer at. One day, Chip noticed a picture of Joanna hanging in the shop. “Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his shop,” Chip told Popsugar. “I knew I’d marry her one day just by the picture on the wall.”
Joanna worked for her father after graduating college, even starring in some of the businesses’ commercials. Of course, Chip saw those as well and recognized her as Jerry’s daughter.
Still, the two didn’t meet until Chip needed more work done on his car. He went into the auto shop for a brake check, and who was working there that day, but Joanna. “We met in the waiting area and hit it off immediately,” Joanna shared with Popsugar. “He was genuinely engaging and he had such a sincere smile.”
Chip’s pick up line that day? “Hey, you’re the girl in the commercials.” It must have worked!
They were immediately smitten with each other, and it didn’t take long for them to take their relationship to the next level. The couple dated for a year before getting engaged and tied the knot in 2003.
Chip and Joanna have always had a love of design and remodeling. In fact, their very first home together was also their first fixer-upper project. They started renovating a home after returning from their honeymoon and realized they were an amazing team from the start.
Now, the couple has a large family of their own with four children — Drake, Ella Rose, Duke and Emmie Kay.
On top of raising their kids, they also own a slew of businesses and take care of their own farm. When not filming Fixer Upper, they run a bakery, the Magnolia Silos, Magnolia Market, The Magnolia House and Joanna’s line of home decor.
These two seem to be made for each other, and it’s a delight seeing them interact and goof off together on Fixer Upper. Watching the transformation of the homes is pretty cool, but there’s no denying that Chip and Joanna’s loving relationship makes the show the addicting sensation that it is.
