A north Texas woman recently risked her life to ensure that a total stranger was able to keep living theirs. 69-year-old Brenda Jones gave up her spot on the liver transplant list after learning a young girl’s life depended on it. It’s truly a beautiful story.
Jones had been waiting on the liver transplant list for a year. On July 18, she got the call that it was finally her turn. But when she got to the hospital, she found out that there was a young woman who needed the liver more than she did.
23-year-old Abigail Flores was flown to Baylor University Medical Center that same day due to liver failure. Doctors told her she only had 24 hours to live. Jones knew that giving up her spot on the list was the only way Flores would survive. Miraculously, Jones’ liver was a match for Flores and the rest is history.
“In my heart, I wouldn’t have been able to live with the liver if I had let this little girl die,” Jones explained. “And I still had more time — I would have been a very selfish person.”
And as karma would have it, Jones received her new organ just a few days later. Thankfully, both ladies are recovering well after this incredible experience.
