How to Make the Perfect Texas Sheet Cake

Cake can serve as a precise indicator of where you are in the country. The Texas sheet cake, for example, is a dead giveaway. It has deep ties to the German Sweet Chocolate Cake that originated sometime in the 1900s, according to Relish.com.

However, the big upside to the Texas sheet cake is that it’s way simpler to make and tastes just as good. The ingredients are thrown together in a single bowl, then baked in a large jelly roll pan and finally topped off with chocolate frosting and pecans.

Betty’s Kitchen has you covered to make the ultimate chocolate Texas sheet cake for your next shindig or potlock. (Hint: sour cream plays a serious role in this recipe. However, many traditional family recipes use buttermilk).

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Chocolate sheet cake frosting
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions

Put the first five ingredients into a saucepan. Put over low heat and allow the chocolate chips to melt. In a large bowl mix together the sugar, flour, salt, eggs, baking soda, sour cream, vanilla and ground cinnamon until well combined. Add in the warm saucepan mixture to the large bowl and combine. Pour into a large jelly roll pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Top off with warm chocolate frosting and chopped pecans. Enjoy!
